Sesame Spelt Bagels

One of my first jobs was at Perfecto’s Caffe, an Italian bagel shop just outside of Boston.  Didn’t know that Italians made Bagels?  Well, they do.  At least in Boston they do.  And, these bagels are the best I’ve ever tasted (I’m not just saying that because I worked there).  I haven’t been back to Perfecto’s since my junior year of high school, when my barista job allowed me to save up enough money for a one-way ticket to Paris, but I can still remember how delicious and light the bagels were.  From what I’ve heard, the owners (and brothers) Max and Andrea Gabriello are more popular than ever and continue to provide the community with perfect Italian espressos, homemade bagels, and biscottis. Roasted Eggplant and Fennel Dolmas

I always assumed that dolmas was complicated to make.  Actually, it never even crossed my mind to try.  But there I was in one of my favorite Parisian baking shops, that happens to sell some other random cooking stuff, staring at a jar of grape leaves.  I wanted to buy it, but I wasn’t sure what I would do with it.  Read the rest of this entry »


Guacamole


It doesn’t get any better or any more simple than this: avocado, lemon, salt, and tomato.  Growing up in New Mexico, making guacamole was a family ritual that ended with one of us scraping out the bowl with the spatula.  When I left New Mexico, Guacamole was the one thing I could easily make that would quickly fix any craving for New Mexican food.  Read the rest of this entry »
